Licence and International Driving Permit
To ride in Nepal you need your full home driving licence with a motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry both, plus the bike’s papers or rental agreement, at all times. Police checkpoints are common and will ask. The minimum age to rent is 18.
UK riders can get an IDP at PayPoint or the Post Office; US riders through AAA; Australian riders through their state motoring club (NRMA, RACV, RACQ and others). Make sure the IDP covers motorcycles.
Best time for a motorbike tour in Nepal
| Season | Months | Riding conditions | Best routes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–May | Warm, mostly dry, some afternoon haze | All routes; Upper Mustang from April |
| Monsoon | Jun–Aug | Heavy rain, landslides below Jomsom and on hill roads | Upper Mustang (rain shadow) with flexibility |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | Dry roads, clearest views, busiest season | All routes — the best overall |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Cold and clear; snow and closed lodges up high | Nepal Highlights, Chitwan, Lumbini, Rajpath |
How much does a motorbike tour in Nepal cost?
Guided tours run from roughly USD 170–270 per rider per day all-in (bike, fuel, guide, mechanic, lodging, most meals and permits), depending on route, group size and comfort level. As a guide:
- 10–11 days on the paved highlights loop: about USD 1,800–2,500
- 9–11 days to Lower Mustang or Manang: about USD 2,000–2,800
- 12–13 days to Upper Mustang: about USD 2,700–3,500
Self-riding is cheaper: bike hire of USD 30–115 a day, fuel, simple lodges at USD 10–40 a night in the hills and meals at USD 5–15. But you cannot self-ride Upper Mustang, and a breakdown in the gorge without a mechanic can end your trip.
Choosing a bike
| Bike | Why riders pick it |
|---|---|
| Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 | Most power and best suspension; the modern choice for Mustang |
| Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 | Proven, simple and easy to fix in remote villages |
| Honda CRF250L | Light and nimble; ideal for shorter riders and rough tracks |
| Hero Xpulse 200 | Light and cheap; good for confident riders on a budget |
| Royal Enfield Classic 350 | Comfortable on tarmac and for two-up riding |
Travel insurance
Many standard policies exclude motorcycling, or only cover it if you hold the matching licence at home and wear a helmet. Check that yours covers riding a motorcycle of the engine size you will hire, at the altitude you will reach (up to 4,100 m in Upper Mustang), and includes emergency evacuation.
Gear checklist
- Helmet — bring your own if you can; rentals are basic
- Adventure or motocross boots
- Armoured jacket and trousers, plus a rain layer
- Summer and warm gloves
- Warm layers and a down jacket for Mustang and Manang
- Buff or dust mask for the gorge
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hydration pack
What the roads are like
Highways around Kathmandu and Pokhara are paved but busy with trucks and buses that overtake on blind bends. In the mountains, roads are narrow, often unsealed and change after every monsoon: expect gravel, rock, mud, river crossings and occasional landslide debris. Ride defensively, use your horn on blind corners as locals do, and never ride in the hills after dark.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride in Nepal with just my home licence?
You should carry an International Driving Permit as well. Police and rental companies expect both.
Is Nepal good for motorcycle touring?
It is one of the best adventure riding destinations in Asia, with routes from paved hill roads to the high desert of Mustang. Distances are short but riding is slow, so allow plenty of time.
How many days do I need?
A week covers Kathmandu, Bandipur and Pokhara. Ten days gets you to Muktinath or Manang; 12–13 days to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang.
Do I need an off-road background?
Not for the highlights route. For Mustang and Manang you should be comfortable standing on the pegs on loose gravel and rock.
